The correct term for steam cleaning of carpets and upholstery is hot water extraction. 

The most common type of steam cleaning is a 1 stage process, a carpet cleaner will bring a portable machine to your residence, just like the machine that you can rent from your supermarket or hardware store. The steam cleaning machine is filled with water and detergent and your carpet is cleaned without any pre stain solubles.

This "backyard" method cleans your carpet without a rinse process and can leave detergent residue in your carpets.  This steam cleaning method is over 25 years old and is not the preferred method of most carpet cleaners, but this is still being used by a lot of "cowboys" carpet cleaner industry.

Carpet Dry Cleaning

Carpet Dry Cleaning is an alternative to steam carpet cleaning and if used correctly can clean carpets very effectively.  If you have your carpets cleaned on a regular basis you should consider alternating between the two carpet cleaning methods.

• Dry carpet cleaning during the cooler months
